Music for Mateship is an initiative of Brisbane-based musician and educator, Alastair Tomkins. The purpose of the initiative is to encourage and facilitate musicians supporting ANZAC Day by playing the Last Post in their street and also by playing for aged care residences on ANZAC Day (25 April). The idea came to Mr Tomkins when the Australian government announced that there would be community lockdowns and the cancellation of traditional ANZAC Day ceremonies and marches as a response to Covid 19. Thousands of musicians across Australia of all ages playing a wide range of instruments answered the call in 2020 during the lockdown. Mr Tomkins was recognised recently for his community service when he was a finalist in the ABC Radio Brisbane 2020 Community Spirit Awards.
